One of the main causes of stress among American adults is job-related issues, with 46% of people blaming their anxieties on the workload itself. If you also feel your job is taking a toll on your health, it’s important to take some time for yourself after the workday.
Are you looking for some ideas to pamper yourself and unwind? This is how to relax after work and why you should.
1. Unwind With Your Favorite Movies
Watching movies or watching TV is a great way to take yourself away from the stresses of real-life and envelop yourself in a fictional world. Make some popcorn, grab your favorite blanket, and turn on Netflix.
Do you need some ideas of what to watch? A good comedy can always lift your mood.
One of our go-to favorites is Ghostbusters (1984). And after finishing the film, you won’t believe what the Ghostbusters cast looks like now!
2. Listen to Music
Whatever your favorite genre of music is, turn it on when you get home. Listening to some songs you love can put you in a much better mood. It’s not just in your head either—it’s scientifically proven!
One study looked at two groups of front-line nurses, one group that sat in silence during their break and another group that listened to music. The nurses that listened to music had lower perceived stress levels, lower heart rates, and less cortisol in their bodies afterward.
3. Practice Self-Care
There are many different forms that self-care can take, but essentially, you want to take care of your mind and body. Doing so can help lower your stress levels and reduce the chances of workplace burnout. So one of our most important tips for relaxing is to treat yourself.
Here are some self-care and relaxation ideas:
- Have a spa day (even if it’s at home)
- Take a relaxing bath
- Meet with your friends
- Talk a walk in nature
- Take some time for hobbies
4. Try Yoga
Many people take up yoga or meditation to learn how to control their stress. Besides the physical benefits, yoga also helps with your mental well-being. You’ll learn how to meditate and practice breathing designed to relax the body and calm the mind.
Perhaps most importantly, yoga teaches you self-awareness. The next time you feel overwhelmed at work, you can take a step back and take a few moments to just breathe.
5. Immerse Yourself in a Good Book
When we were kids, storytime was one of the most exciting parts of the day. It was easy to get lost in a good book, as you were temporarily pulled away from your own stresses and brought into a fictional world.
Pick up a new book or revisit one of your favorites. If you feel short on time, listen to an audiobook on your commute or through a wireless pair of headphones as you clean the house.
